Friday night at the 2017 TransAtlantic Festival is made in Miami, Saturday night sees its roots in Africa. The Rhythm Foundation brings it all together, with a weekend of modern world music under the stars at the North Beach Bandshell in Miami Beach, Friday and Saturday April 21 and 22. Awarded “Best Festival” by the New Times last year, this is the 15th edition of TransAtlantic Festival.
On Friday, a group of Miami music veterans fuse rhythms of the orishas with house music – A.C.H.É, The AfroCuban House Experiment featuring OSCAR G (Murk Records, Funky Green Dogs), OBA Frank Lords and Katiahshé. The opening warm up is with Los Herederos and DJ Lazaro Casanova. On Saturday, the young Sudanese-Brooklynite, Sinkane, takes the stage with his funk- soul-afropop group followed by blended sounds of Malian music and American blues by Vieux Farka Toure.
The festival includes creative activations of the public spaces in and around the Bandshell, including live t-shirt screen printing and capoeira performances by Nago Academy. Food and craft vendors line the festival grounds, and after-show parties at area bars are compered by Blackbird Ordinary serving handcrafted cocktails.
